Continental timing belts are only $12... That's pretty cheap to me. Well when I say cheap I mean affordable... Is there a lower cost option? A pack of rubber bands tied together???
Yeah, it's really not worth cheaping out. When you buy the full kit, what could you be saving by going with Dayco or Gates over Continental, $50 max? It's just not worth it to save that $50 in the long run.
To clarify, the belts aren't the problem with those kits. I'm more concerned about potentially poor quality pulleys/bearings.
I'll agree there. I was sold on the better parts for no other reason than they are made by Aisin. Guess who makes all of Toyota's hydraulic parts and carbs? Aisin. Aisin makes a quality product.

I was referring to the price difference between Continental kits vs. the low end brands. Kits are around $225 with the water pump, IIRC.

Yeah, what were you asking here?

Or at RockAuto https://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/conti ... +belt,5716 it is currently $5.55 on closeout (stock up!), $11.34 for regular inventory, etc. ...

everything is cheap except the pump. I only replace the pump after 200k if its original. If its no name I always replace it. I dont bother with the tensioner as I've never seen a bad one. Just dont stick it in a vise and crank it down fast. so that leave 2 rollers and belt. around 120 for Volvo or INA. and continental. Im sure there is no problem with gates, only their kit is sub standard for the rollers and especially the pump. The pump will eat the belt if it seizes up. If the rollers seize there is smoke and a good chance you will hear the shrieking. the belt will not break till it melts or the roller falls apart. so you will usually catch it unless you lent the car out.

That (hydraulic) tensioner stopped being used in 97 (OK in a few 98 vehicles too). This thread is about a 2000 V70 which has a mechanical tensioner/roller that should be replaced every time.

The hydraulic tensioners from Aisin have great longevity though, I agree with you there.

And don't throw away a factory pump with under 200k on it! Totally agree! Happens all the time, I see a 150k P80 car for sale and the ad says "water pump just replaced!" which is usually very bad news ...
