Nice catch on the PCV orangex. That’s completely plugged, at the red circle.

That may then explain the sludge in the oil. I'm also in Canada and never seen such sludge at the oil change, and also do small distances (+ I use basically the same oil) - but my PCV works fine.

Thank you guys for this is precious information.
Now, how do I clean the PCV, if the hole you circled is clogged, that it easy to clean, but where do I start to clean the whole PCV? Is it difficult to do?

Also, apologies for the question, but I never worked this area of my car, it is all new to me, where is exactly the inlet mesh you refer to?

Thank you,
Alex

For the pcv job on a turbo engine, there are a few write up and also a few videos on Youtube. Good to write down the few special tools needed (usually a wobble joint 1/4" size if I remember) and the few difficult parts such as the ptc nipple (I think there is a recent post with a helpful trick on this). Parts from sites like fcpeuro are not that cheap but it's recommended to replace all hoses (plus gaskets and hardware). Also a good moment to throw in a new thermostat

Oragex,

I have cleaned the oil pan, including the clogged PCV hole. Since I am going to clean/replace the PCV, should I first re-install the oil pan and then work on the PCV or is there a benefit to remove the PCV without the oil pan in place?

Also, you asked this question:
The inlet mesh, can you undo the whole pipe? I would just try a water hose on the other end, gently.

Where is the inlet mesh you refer to?

Thank you,
Alex

Alex, it’s the pickup mesh , like a grill, where the oil pump picks up the oil in the bottom of the sump. It should be on the bottom of the thing sticking down from the engine block. It stops the pump from sucking up big pieces of oily rubber ducks floating in the sump

Abscate,

Thank you, I have already removed it, it is also clogged, so will it work to soak it in hot water and degreser?

Also, although the PCV Nipple P/N 30731007 is for the S60, I believe I should be able to use it for my XC70, but I am looking for a confirmation here.

Thank you,
Alex

The PN 30731007 is $40.

All you need is:
- Clean the old banjo connection hole. No need to d/c the coolant side.
- Get silicone hoses with appropriate diameter (maybe 3-4 mm in size) and change the plastic pipe portion.
- The barb fitting can be re-used.

Volvo P/N 30731007 is for the 2.9L used in S80 1999-05 | XC90 2003-05.

That is what I am saying, but it looks like it works for the XC70 too, has any body used it yet?
