Service Air Conditioning

I have my son's 2006 XC90 for the week while he is out of town. When he bought the car the seller noted he had replaced the air conditioner compressor (new) but never went through the process of getting it charged with refrigerant and working. I offered to do that for him.

I have a vacuum pump and a manifold gauge set. In the past I've been able to successfully vacuum an a/c system and recharged....but not on a Volvo. A brief search online of "step by step" suggestions for what I'm proposing to do with the Volvo has come up empty.

I would appreciate any help you could provide, to include the type of PAG oil and how much to put in, how many cans of refrigerant to put in, etc, step by step stuff, etc.

The 134a capacity for the vehicle is on the yellow sticker on the radiator support.
the capacities are 35oz (2.2#) of 134a with 6oz of PAG100 if it has only front A/C
46oz (2.9#) of 134a with 7oz of PAG100 if it has rear A/C

For the procedure, what engine is it? The receiver/dryer and o-rings should also be changed.

Thanks. It's the 2.5L engine.

I'm looking at the receiver/drier online, connected to the condenser. Is that where the high pressure port is?

You can get a clone Dice unit online if you want on Amazon or ebay, but the VIDA can give you a lot of detailed information you need even on it's own. If you are going to be working on this car or for your son's later use for codes, diagnosis, VIDA/Dice is indispensable.

Is it the same thing, just a different "model"?

^^^ I didn't send a link for a receiver/dryer. It's probably just a forum advertising hyperlink embedded in the text. If you need a receiver/dryer, I suggest FCP euro, Ipd, or RMeuropean for online shopping.

In the past I've gone to Napa and they have had an o ring kit. Or maybe it was eBay. Can't remember. But it was an AC oring kit for my car.

Oh, if you meant the drawing of the receiver/drier in the manual, yes sometimes they just use the line drawing from the older version if the procedure is the same.

Thanks for handing in there with me. It is making a huge difference.

When I said "what are the places that need o-rings, I meant on the actual A/C system itself. For example, the receiver drier looks like needs two, which should come already installed with the new one. The compressor lines I suspect are two more. Where else in the system should I be looking? A/C o-ring kits come with a ton. I supposed I can figure this out myself, but if you can hint at it, It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
