For several months I have been trying to located the origin of the oil/crayon odor inside my car.(no crayons left from kids are in the car) The car has been to two different Volvo dealers who agree that a smell exists but do not know the cause. They checked for leakage /seeping fluids under the car without finding anything. I may have found the area where its coming from. Its seems to come from under the dash behind the glove box area but don't know whats causing it. The cabin filter has been replaced and the old cabin filter had no smell to it. No moisture was noted on the floor or any thing leaking. I suspect its might be something electrical that heats or warms up. Its very noticable without the A/C or fan on. Anybody getting in the car makes a statement about the awful smell, Does anyone have an idea as to what else is in the general vicinity behind the glove box that could be the origin of the odor.

Thank you

Resurrecting this old thread given that I have the same issue on my 2006 XC90 Ocean Race.

Here's my thread: viewtopic.php?t=108286

The internet is now full of theories regarding this if you search around, search youtube, ask AI, etc.

Basically 2000's European autos used materials that break down over time and off gas this smell. Isn't that swell?

I'm trying to find out exactly what components in mine are offgassing, to determine if it's worth replacing them.
