Taking is apart is quite difficult, the rear panel had plenty of screws if I remember well. The easier thing is to place a vacuum cleaner right on the grill (careful not to touch the sensor). Some cars also had a small fan behind that can go bad, but it wasn't on all models.

Remember to have the car battery disconnected when this CCM unit is disconnected, so as not to get a permanent SRS message and light on the dash

Good thing I already have the SRS message from my dog spilling a carton of iced tea down the front vent, smh. Took it apart and it was bad.. but the ac is definately still not working. When you start the car and turn the ac on it works amazing, almost too cold. Then the clutch will disengage and will not re engage until it wants to..but when I does it gets ice cold again. Then the ecm fan will not turn off until it dies. I could travel for a week without the ac on and never need a jump but any trips with the ac on even when turning the ac off and re starting the car for a bit the ECM fan wont turn off until the battery is dead. Ive tested the battery several times and it holds charge but this cooling fan is going to kill it eventually unless I fix this issue. Going to the junkyard tomorrow and just pulling a new compressor among other things the car needs. I also have to send the dash out for the second time for dim failure. I love my wagon and it is neccesary for it to work because I travel with my dogs frequently. But man I wish I would have taken pics of that grid because it was ridiculous!

We did locate a clutch part on another thread but I’m not sure about compatibility with the XC70 series

This is typically the 'large gap' clutch issue. Google about it, the gap goes a little too large and the clutch no longer engages as the engine warms up a little. People fix this with 'shims' (google)

By ECM you mean the little fan right under the power steering reservoir ? This little fan runs only when the ECM (or ECU) gets warm in hot summer days. This little fan runs for 1-2 min after the cars is turned off in hot summer days, and when operating normally should not be related with the a/c.

Yes that little fan, that's what I'm so confused and baffled about. Only runs after ac is used and stays on! I knew I had a draw after using the ac and I knew it wasnt the cooling fan because you can hear that even with the hood closed. One day after using the ac I got my ear down in the engine compartment and discovered what the culprit is. I'm going to pull on of those today too. I wont get to work on it until the weekend but ill be ready to go

That is tricky then because that fan is only triggered by the 2 ECM modules internal temperature - as far as I know. It is simply a fan with a connector, the temperature sensor is inside the modules. This fan is important to prevent the ECM from frying in summer days so cannot leave it disconnected. I have a video how to remove the modules if you want, maybe look at the large white connector base for corrosion, water, etc www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQYOiS__oyo I think Xemodex can fix these (not cheap) If you remove the box around the modules, keep the modules down with one hand to prevent pulling on them - the box is hard to slide off the modules

Got a new fan off of a pristine 04 and replaced it tonight so we should see!

I'm trying the bread clip fix but do you think I can find one in sight! The gap is currently a tiny bit more than .89mm but that was the last one I could measure with. I'm hoping it will be the fix, ill update when done!

Please do let us know the results. I’m having the same problem with my 03 V70 with 240,000-ish miles. The AC will run all day long as long as I’m moving down the road or not standing still for too long. Sit in the line at a fast food joint and the compressor will stop running. Turning the AC switch on and off will alter the engine idle a bit but there won’t even be a click noise from the clutch which makes me think the problem is something other than the clutch gap. If I shut it off and run in a store for a few minutes the AC will work fine when I return. That is until I come to a stand still again.

The gauge on my cheapy refrigerant fill hose says the low pressure port pressure is right in the green zone with the compressor running at idle. I didn’t look at the gauge with RPMs elevated nor have I checked the high pressure port pressure to get an idea how well the compressor is performing.

I too am not seeing the volume of evaporator drip that I would expect in our humid climate.

A couple questions: Where is the pressure switch located and what is the allowable gap in the clutch (when disengaged).

When I got the refridgerant flushed and recharged and cleaned the grid on the temp control I got the water underneath again you would expect to see in humidity. But I have the same symptoms as you and I am 98% positive the bread clips will fix this, I'm just waiting to goto the grocery store, lol. Will update!

Winner! 6 zip ties and the ac works!

Battery has since died, RIP. I'm jumping every time I start. Was over the moon today in my cheap defeat and brand new OEM rear struts pulled from the junk yard (stickers still on springs, $21 a piece).

Jumped the car and left work and the car reaked like a gas station. Pulled the rear seat and fuel pump leaking like crazy- I cant make this stuff up. JB Weld to the rescue, I hope.
