Swapping Remote Module

Post by mt98t5 »

I'm in the process of parting out a 1998 V70r. Can I remove the remote module and install it into my 1998 S70? I didn't get a remote with the S70 and the trunk lock is different than the ignition so I am considering swapping out the ignition and other locks from the R too.

Yes, plug in the module and if you have a working remote from the V70 to go with it, it will work in the 98 S70. Programming the remotes requires a trip to the dealer on a 98.

If your ‘98 S70 already has a remote module in the dash,
and you’re only missing the 9166200 fob, there should’t be
any reason to change the receiver module. Just get a hold
of a functional fob and have it programmed into the car.

Bumping this... I've heard different stories on this. Is it really necessary to go to do the dealer to program remotes on a 1998 S70? Volvo has tried to do the procedure on an acquaintances' 98 S70 but they said it didn't work for what-ever reason.

It isn't as elaborate a procedure as it is on the '99+ versions but you do need the Volvo Scan Tool or the equivalent to mate the remote on a '98. The 850s are totally DIY and the '99+ are a software download. The '98 is in between but I think my local shop charged me maybe $10.00 to do it on my daughter's old S70.
