Check engine light is not on because of a recent, or otherwise oil change. Have a shop, or parts place Autozone, etc. run the codes. Go from there. Otherwise, advice provided thus far is a starting point.

To clarify, there are two lights that often get mistaken for each other.

There's a Check Engine Light that's common to all cars and indicates
some kind of engine trouble and usually indicates stored code(s).
This is the important one that you need to look into.

Then there's a SERVICE light that's tripped by a preset mileage
programmed into the odometer to remind the driver of maintenance.
This one just comes on for two minutes and only needs a reset.
