Factory Stereo System in a 1994 Volvo 850

Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie here and just purchased my first Volvo. I'm in Vancouver, Canada. I've always wanted an 850 Turbo, and found a mint 1994 with low kms (150,000 kms). I would like to say hi and introduce myself. I will have a few questions I will be posting here.

Here's one for now:

Does a 1994 Volvo 850 Turbo have a factory amplifier for the stereo? I bought my car with an aftermarket cd player, but the rear deck speakers aren't working or hooked up.

This is from the spec sheet for your car:

AM/FM stereo, "full-logic" cassette, anti-theft circuitry, 80 watt amplifier, CD Changer capability, 8 speakers, and power antenna;

Checking the wiring diagram shows that the rear shelf speakers are wired as a branch off the rear door speakers. If the rear door speakers are working it is possible that they have been disconnected inside the door.

If the doors are working, it's also possible that the tweeter magnets in the shelf speakers have fallen off and gotten sucked into the main cone - after which neither part works too well! It's a simple fix with some good epoxy. To check, remove the four 9mm nuts holding the shelf speaker units into place (they're inside the trunk, easiest to do with the back seat folded down), lift the assembly up, and disconnect the cable. From there, it's easy to open up the case and see if the upper magnet is intact.

I did what you suggested. It worked great, and the problem was exactly as you described (magnet fell off the tweeter).

Why does the tweeter have such a large, heavy magnet for such a small speaker?? I didn't bother glueing the magnet back onto the tweeter, as it seems to work without it.

Is this a bad idea? It's just that the magnet seems quite heavy for even a strong glue to hold.

Your tweeter needs the magnet. Take some good glue and reattach it. Your tweeter won't put out the volume it's suppose to without it. When we had a '94 850 the same thing happened. I glued mine back and it was still attached when we sold the car 3 years later.
