Noisy Blower Fan

Hi,

My blower fan currently sounds like this at medium speed:

It seems to blow air just fine, despite the noise. Should I have the motor replaced? Or what is the best course of action?

Insulation has sucked into the squirrel cage. Get it out immediately or the fan motor will be damaged. Had it happen to my car and it sounded just like that. I didn't get it in time so my fan had to be replaced at a cost of $1200. June

Thanks. From the post and video I saw about how to replace the blower motor, I’m trying to see where insulation would come in contact with the squirrel cage.

Recirculate blend door is backed with insulation that comes loose. At least on my car that is what the mechanic said. June

Oh ok. That makes sense. So I’ll most likely need a new recirculator, if that insulation has broken off?

The mechanic took the panel under the wipers off and was able to reach his hand into the fan to remove the insulation. Apparently this is not too uncommon at least on the 2004 S80. That sound is unmistakable. I left mine like that too long. Don't make that mistake as the fan is expensive. The recirculate door was never replaced on my car and no issue has arisen.

There doesn’t appear to be anything visible caught in the fan (without removing it). Does anyone have any ideas?

I talked to a local Volvo (non-dealer shop), and they confirmed the motor is going bad. They are saying the resistor has to be replaced as well. Does this sound accurate?

Also, anyone know where the blower motor resistor is located?

It appears to be #3 in the above picture...but how do I access it? Somewhere from the driver’s side?

On my car it was replaced with the fan. It is attached to the fan motor housing. June
