98 v70 to 98 v90 steering wheel swap?

Post by CIK7 »

Call me weird, that's ok. No judgements please. My mom is notorious for saying I'm weird, which is true. Everyone that knows me, knows I'm weird. I like DIFFERENT different, not normal different.
I find the s/v90 steering wheel to be more appealing than the s/v70 steering wheel. As always I searched for this before making this post. The one i found said that the steering wheeling on sv70 is same as in the sv90. This is not true. Look at the two (screenshots posted below. Imo the sv90 wheel is a VERY FLAT and shortened-spoke version of the 2000s Chevy Tahoe, suburban, Silverado.
Anyway so I want to know if ANYONE has done an sv70 to sv90 steering wheel swap. If not, does anyone know of a schematic/diagram of both wheel assemblies? I mean it when I say that I want to make the ultimate v70 xc that nobody would have ever thought of. Can someone please also direct me to a general place on here where I can share my ideas with the mvs community?

The simple answer is I have no idea. But maybe there a re a few considerations to take into account when trying this, and mostly that will require having an S/V90 wheel to hand as well as a removed S/V70 to compare against:

1) is the depth from the base plate on the back of the wheel to where the locking nut sits the same?
2) Assuming 1) is yes, then will the S/V90 wheel clear the column covers when installed?
3) is the position of the pin for activating the cancelling of the turn signals in the same position in terms of radius from the center of the column to the the pin, as well as pin depth.
4) Most importantly, is the steering wheel splined shaft the same diameter and number of teeth?
5) Does the clock spring connect the same way on both?

I'm sure others can add to this question you have asked but having one may be the only way to find out.

Neil.

If it concerns you (it probably should!) the airbag may deploy differently - different angles of colounm etc. Trigger methods may be different too.

Sometimes it pays not to roll the dice with safety. It may not be your choice for looks, but it was designed as a complete package.

Completely your call though. Just playing devils advocate...

Definitely start with spline count. If that’s different your swap ends there

You might be able to see if the steering shaft is a common part on Volvo OEM , drilling down on the steering wheel section and comparing part numbers.

Then do the same for the airbag and connector
