Big Oil Leak front of 2.5T - Two cam seals and front crank seal - Any other seals ?

Post by waid302 »

I have a big oil leak in front of my 2005 XC90 2.5T. Not really sure where its coming from but the timing cover is covered with oil and so is the timing belt. Its going through a quart of oil every 2 months. From what I can tell, there are 2 cam seals and 1 crank front seal. It looks like the front crank seal is fine but the cam seal may leaking. The area around the turbo is dry and so is the turbo return oil. With 160,000 miles on it, I will replace all 3 seals up front.

Is there any other seals in front beside the two cam and crank seals?

Since I will need to remove the cam gears, is this the tool I need?

There are two cam seals one for VVT and one without VVT. How can I tell if my 2005 XC90 came with VVT ?

I will be getting seals from RockAuto along with other brake brake parts. Just want to verify that I get correct seals.

What are the correct part number for the cam and crank seals?

Thanks you!

You might have a leaky VVT hub. Your at the age but 15K less miles than my car had when one leaked. I have read several other posts with leaky VVT hubs at 15 years 170K ish. June

Thanks

Search for my posts and posts by "Jordank" in volvoforum(s).com.

I posted detail diagram there.
You should:

1. Get 2 REAR cam covers.

2. Tool to lock rear of camshafts. About $40-$50 on ebay, maybe less. Search for good tool, bad tool tends to crack.

3. FRONT cam seal. I'd use Corteco brands (FCPEuro).

4. Very often the VVT has a lot of play at 160K. New unit $250 or so.

5. Timing Belt kit (Use Volvo Genuine at $110).

6. Aisin Water Pump $55.

The main crank seal rarely leaks before 200K.

2 cam seals could be a tip off for clogged PCV system. How does it do on the glove test?

Start with PCV as E Showell suggests. Excess pressure will push oil through the seals. Many times that is the only correction needed.

Glove test first.

Yes. Oil under pressure runs through the VVT hubs. I believe the hub used a o-ring of some kind internally. For about a year before the leak I noticed a faint chatter just momentarily from idle driving. Like the first 100rpm. Also the last 10K the engine clattered for a split second during first cold start only. If one is leaking you should replace both. June

I will do the glove test to see if the PCV is blocked. Did some reading on the VVT Hub and will need to check if there is any play in it and replace it if bad enough.

Also I found this O-Ring on eBay. Is this what causes the leak?

Last year I did timing belt, water pump etc... and did not see any leak at the time.

Thanks

The O-ring for VVT you see on ebay may help with internal leak (this leak does not allow the VVT to advance or retard the cam as designed). But it will not solve the excessive play at that mileage.
Search youtube and you will see the high-mileage VVT walks in and out, causing the timing belt to "walk".

If you plan to keep the car for a while, then new VVT is not a bad idea.
