I am thinking of buying a 1999-2002 S80 T6 and have read much about how the numerous issues which arise with these notoriously high maintenance cars.
I have a broad question for a specific situation:
1) Budget: $6-8K (not from a dealer)
2) Maintenance tolerance: 4 hours month (for major repairs, plus obvious cleaning)
3) Desires: Comfort, low- mid level maintenace
Are there other Volvo sedans within those parameters which might meet those requirements I can look at? I was enamored with the S80 till finding out how many maintenance headaches typically came with it, and now I am trying to stay in the Volvo family with a "better sibling" if you get my drift.
Any advice on models & their corresponding best years within that budget would be much appreciated!!

Sedan? The S70 was made until '00.
Of course the later year the better for the 'S80. Avoid the first, '99 year at all costs.

The S80 series is Volvo's top of the line for luxery and if purchasing a used one, I'd stay clear of any older than the 2002 model...If you happen to know personally of a older S80, who owned it and some history, then it might be a great car for you....Volvo did have some problems with the 99 thru 2001 models...
My 2002 S80 is the Turbo T6 which I do consider high maintenance only if you have the dealer do all the necessary work...If you can do the normal oil/filter changes it will same you lots of money..Changing fluids in the transmission/radiator and possible brakes work is also a plus...
These vehicles will give you a couple of hundred thousand miles of trouble free enjoyment if its maintained correctly...Good luck
