1991 740 Shifting Problem (Auto Trans)

Post by strorg »

I am considering a 1991 740 w/auto trans and test drove the car this afternoon. The car shifts very hard, and sometimes will not shift into higher gears unless you coax the accelerator up and down. The speedo works intermittently, but not sure if this is related to the shifting.

Any ideas?

Thanks...Tom

hey, i have a 1991 740, and i seem to be experienceing similar symptoms. The car has been shifting hard like that for a while (like at least two years), and the speedometer has recently been acting up (it shoots up to about 45 mph and just stays there until I turn off the car). Sorry, no ideas, but perhaps knowing that someone else is in your same situation is of some comfort. Will let you know if I ever figure out what the problem is.

hhmmm, i wouldn't think that the transmission shift points are based off the speedometer, so my guess would be that the kickdown cable is stuck. not really sure how to get to this cable other than the small visible portion off the throttle body in the engine compartment though... try pulling it and see if it slides out smoothly..
