07 XC90 3.2 Oil trap loud hissing noise

Post by vmaxmike »

Has anyone with this model engine or newer have the loud whistling / hissing noise happen that comes from under the hood resulting presumably from a clogged oil trap box? Is it possible to clean or service it? Thanks

I do not have that engine but I would assume PCV is a routine service item

Yes, I replaced the oil trap box with built in pvc diaphragm on top of engine and issue solved. Took 10 minutes however $180 for the new part. Naturally Volvo doesn't provide a repair kit which would allow for a cheap and easy replacement of just the rubber diaphragm (part that eventually tears and fails) and cap which pops right off with a little force. Would be nice if some after market company made these like Dorman does for VW/BMW which go for around $20!

on this topic, is it possible to replace the diaphragm with a part from a used cover, assuming the part can be removed from a donor vehicle and reattached?

also I've seen the pvc oil trap covers on ebay or parts sites for between $60 to $175. this is a plastic cover.

Are the cheaper covers acceptable?

Internet search "B6324S pcv diaphragm replacement", been seeing just the diaphragm offered over the last year. Seems like it could a viable alternative to replacing the cover outright.

All,

It may be cheaper to buy the part from Land Rover

Note: the 2008 - 2012 Land Rover LR2 uses the Volvo 3.2

The Land Rover part number is LR023777 it is the same vendor, same part as the Volvo Part it just comes in a Land Rover box

Note: this is for the 3.2 and not the 3.0T

A link that shows what needs to be replaced

If you are really ambitious you can try to replace just the diaphragm

Based on what I've read you will need a heat gun

If you just replace the diaphram please let us know how you did it

Thanks

Paul

installed the aftermarket cover and was i surprised when the bolt holes were slightly off - the repo part is not made exactly as it should be. just what i was concerned about by this $42 part.

so all but 4 bolts lined up at one end end with the threads. there I popped out the aluminum inserts, cut them in half with the cut off wheel, and reinstalled to get some stretch in the plastic opening that allowed the 4 bolts to line up.

cheap was not the way to go, but the hiss is gone!

Hi, raquette and pgill:

I am attempting to replace the diaphragm. Thank you both for your information. You mentioned the use of a heat gun. Is that needed in order to soften the cap so that it can be removed? Sadly I tried to pry it a bit too hard and some of the plastic around the edge broke off. Getting the cap to pop off is not so easy. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Also, raquette, I just ordered an aftermarket piece for $40 from a Chinese distributor. I'm now worried that I will get the part that has the misaligned holes, given the low price. Do you recall where you purchased yours?

Thank you! John

Here is an image of the item that I ordered. I'm worried that the holes won't align.
