Hi Evan, I will have an extra when I'm done swapping seats. Let me check the condition and I will let you know.

Getting back to my project this weekend. I've been busy yesterday taking things apart for the following purposes:
- replace busted spring seat passenger side
- replace leaking CV axle seal in transmission passenger side
- replace trans. oil with Redline MTL
- all new front brakes
- replace rusted dust shield for front brakes

The CV axle came out super easy, which I'm glad about. Both of them look like they have been replaced not to long ago. The boots are in fine shape.

A few weeks ago I replaced the parking brake cables also. So nice to have that done.

Got everything buttoned up last Saturday, and the car is back on the ground.

While I changed out the axle seal I noticed that a P80 AWD angle gear shaft collar has the PERFECT dimensions to drive in the new seal. I'm glad I kept the stripped one from my 98' V70XC, this made the job super easy.

Next is getting the new exhaust installed along with a new fuel filter. Looking at the total cost for this project so far I think I am passing the market value threshold. Just another case that proofs that resurrecting one of these cars makes no financial sense.

But you guys know that already...

I sure do.. I'm probably 2-3k past the kbb 'perfect condition' value on my car. But I've learned a tooon (I started with zero car knowledge) so I mentality calculate that as education/hobby/personal enrichment. Ultimately the car will only make sense if i use it as my primary vehicle for atleast 3 years. Soo it'll be the shared vehicle for my fiance and I so I guess that'll help with the accounting lol.

How do you calculate, or justify, the costs of fixing up one of these cars?

If you spend 2000 on fixing up a Volvo you get a car that will not depreciate, and can give 100k miles of service.

A low end Kia will cost you that in 6 months payments but will be depreciating the whole time.

If you drive 10000 miles the first year, that’s 20 cpm for repair costs, not bad.

Superfluous information, since you have a perfect seal set in the form of a gear shaft collar—but somebody who doesn't have one of those lying around might be interested to know that a short length of 2 inch diameter PVC plumbing waste pipe is exactly that size.

Home Depot sells 2 foot lengths which is a handy length for the passenger side. You can put a PVC cap on the outward end of the pipe to tap with a hammer, or just use the bare end for tapping lightly with a medium weight hammer.

I have gotten scrap pieces for free from Lowe’s from people who have had cut to length pipe.

Yes, Dirk is a cheapskate.

I had heard about the PVC pipe trick, but I was too lazy to drag my butt to Home Depot only to find out they don't have any scrap laying around. I certainly didn't want to pay for it :o
Plus, the angle gear collar has a nice weight to it, which helps reducing bounce back on the hammer blows

More progress: the new Starla exhaust and the Bosch fuel filter are now installed.

And I have some loose plans for the weekend to take the front seats out and start cleaning the carpet and headliner.
