Power steering fluid has been leaking for a few years. A garage that we don;t use anymore has replaced some pipes but didn;t seem to work.
It has now become a major leak, I have to top it up every 3 days or the steering starts whirrring.
Our new mechanic says it is the rack.

Is there anyway to repair it using a repair fluid? I heard that you can only use the green liquid (CHS?) in there. Will repair fluid for power steering make it worse?

ATP 205 maybe?

You say top off every three days. How many miles is that?

ATP 205 ReSeal is recommended for Power Steering - Rack & Pinion and Steering Box. At $12.00 per bottle vs the cost of rack work, I would try the AT-205 first. It cannot hurt it but it might reseal it. At the most you will be out $12.00.

Oh no, those leak stopping bottles are a scam. Don't forget, fluid is under pressure. If it leaks at the rack seals or at the upper rack box seal, it needs a 'new' rack - I would advise getting a used genuine one but a quality refurb one will work as well. Ebay is not a bad idea, I would look for one from southern US states like Florida, etc. Need to get the correct brand, I guess you will have the ZF one. Meanwhile, since you are loosing lots of fluid, as well use some cheap transmission fluid - just flush and use the green Pentosin if replacing the rack.

That is too big a leak for a stop leak product. It will help with a drip or seep, not with a gusher.

It is time for the rack job.

170000km so 105000 miles

What about Lucas stop leak or is ATP better?
The reservoir looks really leaky. Is there anyway to check where it leaks more from? Like right side is the reservoir, left side is the rack?

Right side of car can be reservoir, but the rack has seals on both ends and either can leak. It will be farther back under car.

Steering Rack, if leaking, usually leaks at 150K+ miles.

Check your reservoir, usually leaks around the 2 halves, where they are joined together.
