My S70 has been starting slowly (eithe rthe battery is dead or my alternator is going bad). I had my battery and alternator tested yesterday and found that my alternator is going bad (battery tested fine).
I had a heck of a time finding the part. The local Schucks and Napa both did not have the correct part in stock. Hopefully I'll get by until it gets in!
Now that I've got the part, I figure that I may as well do the work myself. Is this a difficult job? Has anyone done this before?
Also, does anyone know a good source online that shows instructions for replacing an alternator? I've looked (and will continue to do so), but I haven't found anything yet.

Let me make a suggestion for you to check your service (serpentine) belt and its tensioner before you go after your alternator as this belt turns it. If in fact these are fine, then yeah, tear down into it (and replace the belt and tensioner as needed). I am in the process of replacing mine on my 99 S70 n/a for the second time. It is fairly simple, (maybe an hour for removal and an hour for installation) but here are the steps I took:
1: Disconnect positive battery cable. Disconnect wires from alternator.
2: Loosen and remove the serpentine belt from the alternator.
3: Remove the four bolts which hold the power steering pump in place. All four are 12mm.
4: raise coolant overflow resivoir/power steering resivoir and power steering pump and lay on top of engine.
5: Disconnect upper radiator hose from engine.
6: Disconnect the air supply tubing from the ECU box and swivel it over towards the intake manifold.
7: Remove top alternator bolt 12mm (close to alternator pulley).
8: Remove both of the top bolts from the air conditioning compressor 12mm.
9: Remove the splash guard under the front bumper. One bolt on each side both are 10mm.
10: Loosen both bottom bolts from air conditioning compressor.
11: Remove alternator from car and install in reverse.
I didn't take any pictures while taking it apart, but the following picture is what it looks like after it is out. Maybe you can make it out from this picture, but it's not the best pic in the world.

I am having problems getting the lower alternator bolt back in. I can get the lower right bolt and the top bolt easy. Also I need an image of the belt routing. The hood has been replaced so I don't have that. By the way this is for a 2000 s70.

Lee's would be correct...having 2 routings (one for without the A/C is confusing...although in HareBall's defense, the original document shows that as a dotted line).

They should not be going bad.
Have either of you replaced the "B" battery cable?
That's the cable that goes from the fuse box to the battery.
You can open the fuse box and look at the connection
If the topside looks burned, you can be sure the bottom is fried and you're loosing current.
This fries batteries and alternators,
CHECK THE CABLE.
Most of these cars need it to be replaced after about 7-9 years no matter what the mileage is!
