Is anyone running 19+year old starter motors?
Does anyone have some insight/knowledge of electromagnetic interference (emi) from the starter motor messing with the crank sensor wiring. The crank sensor wiring goes past the rear of the starter, there is a fair amount of info online/forums reporting this issue saying an old starter/worn brushes has a higher amount of emi causing starting problems. I believe temperature (heat soak) from the engine makes the emi worse? anyone know?
Would some emi sheilding wrap work or would only a re route of the crank sensor wiring fix it?

About 99 percent of people who fuss with the crank sEnsor don’t put the wires back in those nice slots that route it so carefully away from the starter and cables, then complain about bad Volvodesign.
Make sure they go back as designed

The advice given above is sound and you should start there.
To reduce induced noise on a conductor I would do the following
1. Move the source of the interference away from the receiver of the interference (this is what is recommended above)
2. Position the cables so that they are perpendicular to each other
3. Wrap a return cable on the positive battery to starter cable (search twisted pair to understand how this works)
4. Add extremely large ferrite clamps to the starter wire
5. Add a shield to the wire that is succeptible to the EMI noise And connect both ends of the shield to a good ground
The engineers at Volvo were likely aware of these possibilities and they solved the problem by focusing on item #1.
Assuming that you are trying to make your Volvo more reliable to start and that you are not trying to redesign it then I recommend you focus on item 1 as well.
You didn’t ask but I don’t think a new starter would generate less EMI, which takes us back to the recommendations above

Anyone have photo(s) of proper, factory LHD wiring arrangement?
Anyone from UK or Oz have photo(s) of RHD arrangement?
Personally, I would like to confirm my 200K mile, 20 year old has proper cable routing. I know it has been apart several times and some fasteners are changed or missing.

I have the plastic bracket that holds the connectors intact, LHD and RHD engines and wiring are the same, engine wiring is the same only the steering wheel/rack /clutch is different. The main problem is the "factory wiring" is routed past the rear of the starter. Theres a video on youtube made from someone in the US

That wiring routing is Not right. They are using the pcv bracket as a wiring bracket.
The wires get tucked into plastic holders that hold the tight along the block at the rear and then turn the corner into connectors on the bracket.
