Could have been worse. The engine could still have been in the car!
Years ago I used to have a frame I could attach to my drill that acted as a drill press. It had clamps that you could adjust to attach it to whatever you were working on but limited in spread it could work with.

If it were a red block, you could use a magnetic base drill.
