Melted coil wire covers

Post by tombrisk »

Checking plugs on my 2000 V70- the protective wiring covers are mostly gone, melted, cracking and brittle.
Is that something to be concerned about?
I have some and will try to replace, but sheesh!

This looks fairly typical. I have replaced some and have considered doing more but the car is running well. "If it isn't broken, don't fix it" is sometimes a good strategy :-)

Perfectly normal. Plastic of this age and seeing high temps will go brittle over 20 years. I replaced all of the wire covers about 5 years ago on my 'R' and also my last V70 base. The leaking oil you have needs to be fixed as that accelerates the issue. Check for PCV pressure (glove test) and also check/replace the oil filler cap seal. Most likely brick hard and leaking.

Try to get wire loom with high temperature rating - at least 250 F, but 300 F is better. The cheaper, common temperature version does not last on top of the engine. IPD has the smaller sizes in the high temperature rating. The larger diameter loom is harder to find in high temperature rating. I found it at Fastenal. Use high temperature, good quality electrical tape as well (3M super 88).
