1986 volvo 240dl will not start.

Post by volvo240dl »

I bought my 1986 volvo 240dl on ebay in November. The guy who sold it to me said that one day it worked and the next day it didnt. I paid 163$ for it so I say its a steal. I saw that the fuel pump was unpluged and someone may have stolen the ?fuel filter?(if so cheap bastards) from the car. Found a plate that will hold the fuel pump in place and connected the wires to it along with reconnecting the fuel line. I have my dad use the jumper cables and I try to start it. It turns over just fine actually exceptionally well for its age. Everything electronically works in the car which I was surprised. My dad asked me if you could hear fuel from the injectors pour into the engine. I couldnt answer that. Any help is appreciated.

When you turn the key on, does the fuel pump buzz under the car? If it does not then you may need to check the relay.

I checked the contacts on the fuel pump relay switch and they look really good no corrosion, but just a little cloudy. Could the fact that the connector being upside down not allow power to the fuel pump?

check for spark when cranking, check for fuel at plugs, go from there.

Did you check if the fuel pump buzzes? In the on position but not crank you should hear a buzz under the car for a couple of seconds. This will tell you if the fuel pump is receiving power from the relay. Relay innards are the secret.

O ok I didnt know it buzzes with out trying to turn it on. Tried to start it yesterday. Yes I checked the connectors to the fuel pump and i cleaned them because there was a little grime on the contacts on wednesday morning. I had a friend over yesterday and had him put his hand on the fuel pump to see if he can either hear or feel buzzing noises but I got none from the 2 fuel pumps I have(got one from a junkyard). Could it be as simple as a faulty fuel pump relay? Ill take pictures if that will help you guys. I checked my spark plugs and they are pretty much brand new. Very few deposits on it.
