Have you tried heating the plug with propane ?
It feels like the gas tank is a bit close for flame heating . I have thought about it though. I have torches I used them to burn the drivers side bearing off. I feel like the gas tank being right there is what stopped me from torching the axle shafts last fall.

You may be right though The gears don't do anything back there and isn't the housing aluminum? I suppose I could drill a hole shoot lube in and plug the hole with literally anything and it would be better than what is going on now.

You can keep heat localized to within a few cm of the flame and use wood to shield the tank. If it doesn’t char you are fine.

Drill, oil, and bung is actually in some cars’ official procedure manual.
