1998 V70 AWD bad rear wheel bearing

Today I was trying to get the E brake working in my 98 V70 . The clips that hold the shoes to the dust shield had rusted away letting the shoes move around . I snapped a bolt off and it turned into a whole big thing.

To get the bolt out I figured I needed the dust shield and hub off so I removed the axle nut and pulled the wheel hub with a slide hammer.

Here is where it gets ugly , the wheel bearing is junk , no doubt has been forever . The previous owner had pulled the rear driveshaft because the rear diff was gone he claimed. Its possible it may have been the rear bearings judging by the looks of them.

Regardless of old spilled milk , now I have the car up hub off junk bearing on the drivers side. The snap ring came out but it is ruined , the outer bearing caged balls fell out on the ground so it all has to come out now.

I'm sure that with a torch I can get the bearing out eventually.

My questions are the following

do the new bearings come with the snap ring ?

If I get the bearing out can I just put the new one in or does it need to be pressed in if pressed in does the knuckle need to be brought to a machine shop ?

Does the hub need to be pressed into the bearing? This was worn enough that I can't really tell if I can put the hub on without a press .

I sorta had an idea that I could yank the axle shaft and throw it away but that is not going to work with this type of bearing is it? Without the shaft the only thing holding the bearing in is the snap ring it seems like

I think you'll have to keep the axle in there, or you'll have to use the outer "cup" with the shaft attached in the bearing. This wheel bearing needs the axle in place. I believe FCP has a blog post on removing the AWD components completely, I was planning on doing this on my R if I don't swap to delta link rear suspension.

I can't tell if the bearing includes the snap ring, but there are separate part numbers. Unfortunately the bearing isn't listed anymore, but I'm sure someone has it.

Rockauto lists bearings down to 15$ , Autozone had a bearing for $60 but no snap ring . I didn't take it I told them I might come back for it.

I actually can't tell if the autozone bearing is the same because its just a double wide sealed unit. What I have is a pile of rusty metal balls and a twisted metal cage and some plastic. Its funny because it was noisy but functional as long as the hub was inside it but once the hub was removed it turned into a piece of boneless chicken.

That link is for 1999 but I found the 1998 page and its the same ring. It looks like a $2 part. I can live with that. There is a volvo dealer near me I could try in the morning , there is also a place called capeway bearing that sells pretty much any bearing you could need . If either of them dont have it I will order from Lisle .

I like your idea of just using the outer part of the axle , that would work the speed sensor as well but not turn the diff. The diff probably is bone dry and I can't get the fill plug out to add any . It looks like they put a steel plug in an aluminum housing and located it in a miserable spot with no room to work so its never been touched in 20 years

I didn't even know they made an AWD S70! If I can't get the ring somewhere I may send you a message about the hub

Whoops, I meant to link the 1998 page but you get the idea! If the remains of the bearing allow for it, try to take a measurement of the inner and outer diameters and the thickness, and check that against the AutoZone bearing if you think it may not be correct. Otherwise if you have a bearing shop nearby, I would definitely give them a try. I'm sure they have a bearing the correct size.

Can I confirm you have a V70 AWD and not a V70 XC? The rear hubs carriers are different although the bearings may be the same. Also be aware the rear brake dust shield is NLA and has been for several years. You may be better to try to buy a good hub with the brake dust shield used from someone like Erie Vo-Vo or more likely from vandsautodismantlers in California due to the East coast salt/rust issues.

Either way I wish you luck. the dust shield can only be removed by either cutting a slot in the sheild on the front most part and bending it to remove it. or by pulling the bearing as you plan to do.

Yes its the V70 AWD , the bearing is mostly out in chunks but I think if I bring the hub to the bearing place they can probably help me out. The snap ring is out in one piece but is no longer round I'll bring that too. The dust shield is mostly ok. I have a slide hammer but with the axle shaft in the hole none of my ends will get on the outer shell of the bearing. If my trip to the bearing place goes well I'll burn it out but for now I'll leave it in.

I haven't managed to get the wheel sensor out its pretty well stuck in the hole so I let it sit overnight with PB blaster. It doesn't really need to come out I guess but it might be safer from damage if its out of the line of torch fire.

The bearing is now out but to get the axle half shaft out I need to pull the knuckle off the control arm anyway?

The nuts are a little rusty , I don't really feel like buying all the nuts and bushings

What if I cut the axle ? Will the upper end come out of the diff or do I need a puller to get it out of the diff?

If I can cut it without a gas tank explosion then it seems like I could cut the outer part off just leaving the magnetic ring for the wheel sensor and bolt it all back together . The out part would need to come out . The passenger side is still hooked up so if I tried to drive then the upper would most likely flail about

I was able to get 3 snap rings at the bearing place and while they were out of the bearing and backordered I showed them the part on the autozone website and they said it is correct
