Degreased Engine, got P1618 Check Engine Light

Post by CabbageFumes »

So, I just picked up a 2000 V70 XC. No codes, everything was fine. Unfortunately the power steering pump had been leaking for a long time. The whole front of the engine (Actual front, not the side facing forward) was filthy. I changed out the pump, and degreased the front, and washed it down with a hose (not a power washer). Everything needed cleaning, the fender well and frame rail, everything near the P/S reservoir and the front corner behind the headlight.
After toweling off all the obvious water, I started it. Started right up. a few moments went by and check engine light went on and a flashing arrow, car in limp mode. My code reader has maker specific codes, so as far as my rear says, it showed "P1618 11 Glow Plug / Heater Relay Circuit Short To B+ "
I can't find anywhere on the interwebs that says anything about this code and a heater relay, only transmission related things.
Anyway, I find it very comforting, sort of, that this happened right after I got it wet. I'm hoping that it isn't just really bad timing for something bad. This was yesterday. Today, I got a big blower and blew out everything I could see, hoping to dry as much as possible. By mid day, the flashing arrow went away, and limp mode went away, It drives just fine now. But the check engine light won't go away, my reader isn't able to clear it, or there really is something wrong. Dunno.

The 1 in the first digit of that P code tells you it is a " manufacturer specific code" as opposed to an SAE standard code.

I'm going to venture that 90% of code reader description maps are wrong. Yours is telling you to check Diesel engine components, for example. Lol.

Second digit 6 means the fault is in ECU output comm circuit..my guess is water got into either the ECU box or the OXS sensors and is messing up,comm somewhere.

The code will clear itself after 40 drive cycles of not being set or you need VIDA/high end scanner to clear it. If you got out of limp mode just drive it, avoiding Orange County of course.

Of course I live in Orange County, so that's a tough one to avoid..
It needs a handful of other things worked on, so when it becomes roadworthy enough, I'll see if it can be cleared with repeated driving....
i'll report back.

Correction, CEL should clear light in 5 drive cycles. It will clear the pending or history of the code in 40 cycles
