2002 XC70 Clicking! Passenger side [loose control arm]

Post by nyurch »

if i ever needed help, now is the time :?

02 v70xc

I have a terrible loud clicking when my car is parked and I turn the wheels. Cv joint right? No. In the past 4 weeks total i have replaced the following:

2 sets of axles on each side. Cardone
Both stabilizers. Moog
Both strut assemblies. Forget the brand.
Ball joints. Moog
New tires all around.

I'm at a loss. Strut seats are tight, everything is tight and torqued. Car runs and drives fine if not great, smooth ride.

Throw me your thoughts before I crush simply from frustration. The click is embarrassing and I can see the 'she needs new axles' look on people's faces. Tia

My kingdom for a 4 post lift.

Lacking that, you need a safe method to get under there and put your hands on the usual suspects whilst someone turns the wheel.
I'm thinking ramps, then jack the car just enough to put jackstands under the subframe plates. Lower car on the jackstands.
The ramps will keep the suspension sprung rather than having the wheels hanging down out of normal configuration.
Find it by feel.

There is no click when its on a lift!

The click feels like it is coming from the hub hence the ball joint replacement, the ball joint i replaced in January failed and needed to be replaced anyway. It is a very prominent click and you can feel it through the whole suspension as well. Is there a chance it could actually be the hub?

I called them stabilizers, brand new.

Is it possible that I went through 2 bad reman axles?? Driver side seems okay.

Is that a single loud click ? Does it repeat as the wheel is turned ? Was it there before replacing the strut assy ? Does it do it if you turn the wheels with the engine off and key in POS II (harder to turn)

Single loud click, its also doing it when coming to a complete stop. Sometimes there is two clicks but never repetitive. I can get a repeat click with turning the wheel right in a certain spot and go back and forth with the wheel.

Was there before strut assembly, my struts were junk so figured while I was in there, might as well change them.

Still clicks when engine is off.

Does it happen when the steering is at full lock ? Or at some random steering angle ? Many miles ?
