These questions regard the oil cooler on the backside of the 5 cylinder engines. It has 2 hose connections.
The cooler has a flat side which mounts against the engine with 2 seals. I assume the seals press against piping within the engine.
What flows where?
I'm guessing the cooler has oil pumped through it via the ports in the contact surface and that coolant is what is piped through the hoses.
That the heat energy is transferred from the oil to the coolant is why the cooler doesn't resemble any other "open finned" radiator.
My other guess is that only a portion of the engine's oil, ~20%, is sent through the cooler.
How close am I?

Yes two oil seals and they cannot be reused (i tried), i removed that cooler to fit my anglegear not realizing the oil ports. From memory only a small amount of oil comes out NOT the whole engine oil.
If you remove the plastic cover there are fins under, not sure why its covered with plastic...
