1983 760 GLE - Broken Motor Mount and frame issues - HELP!

Post by JanineC »

I have a 1983 Volvo 760 GLE V6 (gas, non-turbo, automatic transmission with A/C) with less than 120K miles (I put 2/3 of that mileage on in the last 2 years).

On the passenger side, a bolt snapped/broke away from the frame/cross-member, and the second had no nut :? , so the engine fell down to the sway bar. It wasn't specifically discovered for a year (luckily I didn't die while driving  ) but once it was fixed, we found it broke the motor mount (smashed to a pancake) on the passenger side down to the cross-member. All the weight is now on the solenoid breaking one screw, thereby causing the solenoid to be misaligned.

What I need to know is if there is an easier way to get in and replace the passenger side motor mount without having to remove the refrigeration unit, alternator and all the other stuff on that side?

What is the procedure to remove and replace the passenger side motor mount? And will we need to use the cherry-picker to pull up the entire engine or could it be jacked up enough to change it?

I sincerely appreciate any suggestions you may have to make this as painless as possible. Thanks! 8)

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Both motor mounts are replaced from underneath so you shouldn't need to dismantle up top.

You will need to lift the engine from above as there is no suitable jacking point to lift it from underneath.

Raise and support the front of the car, remove the nuts and through bolt (if you haven't mangled them completely) then raise the engine slightly to remove the mount.

Look at this idea for lifting engine.
