Lower right front motor mount bolt

I’ve got a mechanical question. I ran into trouble today replacing the front right motor mount. One of the bolts broke and I cannot get the rest of it out for anything. I tried heat, left handed Drill bits, and an easy out and that thing is rust welded in there. So my question is how much weight does that front mount support. And what’s the worse case senerio if the other mount bolt failed

With the old bolt in still in there it seems as if it’s holding some of the weight

The problem is the rubber part of the mount fails, not the bolt and then it has to be replaced. A bad motor mount stresses the radiator, the other mounts, and the driveshaft too.

Ugh. Can you drill up through the subframe?

Post a picture. Like abscate suggests drilling it out would most likely be your sole option. Hit it with your flavor of PB Blaster and start drilling small and then work up. Usually when you are close to the actual bolt size it frees up and comes out. So drill through a few sizes and try another size easy out between drill bit changes.

Ah, old bolt still supporting weight, what if the other breaks and how much weight is the broken and good bolt supporting. Can I safely assume you broke the one [(EDIT: Per darrylrobert,) "attached to the bracket"] on the block and there is a stub left?!

thats the front of the engine. its bolted onto a bracket to the block. i was thinking you meant the round mounds on the sides of the engine they also both use brackets.

I assume it is safe to use propane torch here, just keep the flame away from the Timing Belt (or place a heat shield).
Heat it really hot, then use reverse drill.

Or remove the bracket from the car and play with it.

umm..yea its holding weight...The engine weight...did you jack the engine to lift the weight before taking the front mount off?

remove the whole bracket and then use heat or replace bracket.

Thanks for reminding me that it's attached to a bracket. Only replaced two and that was 8 years ago and I no longer own the 98 S70 T5. I don't think he was referring to those bolts regardless as no one ever touches those while removing a mount. Some newer members to the forum won't reference that mount as the front engine mount. Most people will reference engine compartment to location of mount so the front and rear are really the round side ones in reference to the engine.

Since he is referring to two bolts and the broken one holding weight, he is just concerned what would happened if the second bolt broke and what would happen to the car. It maybe safe to assume this also as he referenced front right as in engine compartment position and that mount has two bolts working in conjunction to holding up weight. With the round side mounts weight would not be a concern.

here is a better pic of the bracket, ive been trying to remove the harmonic balancer for some time..finally i was able to drill it free.

you can see two 14mm bolts and a 12mm bolt that may prove difficult (depends on bolt length) with the pulley in place
