Serpentine belt tensioner

Post by loveMy850 »

Mines wobbling back and forth, could this be the pulley or tensioner or both. I know the 12 mm bolts to remove it. How do I put the new one on?. Is there any torque or anything I need to know about. It's all one piece. 94 Volvo 850.

hi i done mine recently its easier than it looks esp if you have smallish hands,in the middle of the tensioner you see a square hole you need a tool i diyed mine out of a bit of scrap square wheelchair frame and you then lock on a spanner and turn it till all the tension is off the belt and then you see a hole in which to insert a splitpin or similar in order to lock the sprung part, like a hand grenade type thing, then theres 2 12mm bolts and the whole thing comes out in one bit.
then you take it to the bench and remove the single bolt holding the tension roller and remove and replace, then simply bolt it back on making sure of belt route is correct and simply release the pin and tension will do itself after a few turns, the tension roller i got from ebay for less than a tenner, may have link i shall see, good luck

The springs do break and the bearing do seize. If you see the tensioner bobbing up and down when engine is idling it has failed. Replace it ASAP unless you want to toast the motor (serp belt jumps or snaps and takes out the timing belt cover and timing belt).

Some of the older tensioners have a Torx head (T45?) in the center of the tensioner. You need a shortie T45 socket.

yes im sure it will fit yours is same year as mine and na so yes should be exact same,as scot said bearings and springs wear but tbh its real easy in a vice to judge this and mine had a visible wobble yet nothing wrong with spring or bearing at 153000 miles just tension roller was worn, replaced 1000 miles ago, zero wobble now, good luck
