Fuel pump electronic module PEM Unit differences 30742823 30769225..same part
PEM Unit for my 05 xc90 2.5t only goes up to 2xx,xxx vin number. Why?? It’s part #30742823 and say it only goes to 2006. Some sites claim 2014. Can I use a PEM with part #30769225 which is said to be for 2007 and up? Is there any difference between these?

All the same to my knowledge S60 XC90 etc. Difference was the way it was secured and especially where its hidden. Goes indeed up to about 2014 on S40 V50. Used units work without programming.

Copied and returned to P2 forum for reference
Note there are different fuel pressure sensors with a chassis split which are not interchangeable , discussed here in this long thread. It's long because the artist who wrote it was meticulous in troubleshooting, analyzing, and diagnostics. Includes discussion of pump, installation, PEM, FPS, and arm wrestling Volvo dealer to success.

I believe it's the same basic PCB in a different enclosure (as noted above), a number of Volvo centric sites seem to reflect this. I have a thread started on another Volvo site relating to compatibility and location to document real-life experience with the XC90.
Some photos posted of the 002 that’s in my '05 (structure week 200425)- https://photos.app.goo.gl/XUaLKPjdZuNfXq4w9 . Took the PEM off for a minute to see what condition it was in since the daily driver had reported a stall a week or so back and I’ve never been had a look so wanted to omit.
Bosch https://www.bosch-automotive-catalog.com/ does note a chassis break at 238088 between 580 001 002 (Volvo PN 8629614/30636431/30742823) and 580 001 007 (30769225/Ford 4N5T-9C105-AG) for the XC90. My "guess" is this chassis number aligns close in model year to when the PEM gets moved inside (2006/2007). Case interior of the heat sink looks a little different between the two, maybe to reduce the oxidation that some of the early model photos have been showing.
Still collecting actual experience on the thread but there are a couple folk with 2005 V8s with broken 002 PEMs already reporting that they are successfully using the 007 as replaced. A review of other P2 forums (using a couple S60R threads as example) suggests the same.
If someone knows of any substantive technical difference between the two part numbers, please post. I know electronics a bit, can do a side by side with components and specs if someone has some decent photos of a 007. I’ve seen a couple different PNS in photos and the PCBs seem identical at first glance which is often suggestive of a specific component value change if anything changes at all.
It’s entirely possible that there are some exceptions but on the surface, for the PNs noted above, you can interchange, at least as has been demonstrated on 5 and 8 cylinder cars.

Midyear change in 2005 starting at chassis number 238089.
You need to look at all six digits of your chassis number, 2xx,xxx won't do.
PEM part number 30742823: Chassis numbers up to and including 238088. (2003 - Midyear 2005).
PEM part number 30769225: Chassis numbers 238089 and higher. (Midyear 2005 - 2013).

Old thread from Dec. 2018 but...
I just want to echo what Tomaszabc said above.
- I have a PEM I removed from a junk yard (2004 V70 2.5T with metal tank), PN 30769225.
- My 2005 XC90 2.5T with 120K miles has the PN 30742823.
I removed PN 30742823 and installed PN 30769225: it worked perfectly for weeks, zero issues whatsoever!
- I am not an engineer but to me, these 2 parts are interchangeable.
Hope this helps someone out there trying to use these 2 parts...

Does anyone here know how to look for the mfg date on the PEM?
Just in case, one wants to know if the PEM has been replaced already by the P.O.
I looked at some PEMs for sale on ebay and there are a whole bunch of numbers, which I don't think represent mfg date.

When buying used on ebay, I'd recommend searching for a PEM unit with Velcro (check ebay photos) bc
Velcro is used for PEM units that are located inside the car (under rear seat or trunk).
These units are probably better than the units that sit outside (under the car).
Although the video by "Peppermint" is nice, there are some minor errors.
Peppermint said the bolt is 6-mm and commented on the metal plate orientation:
1. The bolt is 7-mm, not 6-mm.
The retaining metal plate should be oriented as in my photos below (the Volvo logo
facing you, good advertisement lol).
2. Do NOT disconnect the connector in situ, very difficult,
one can actually damage the connector doing so.
3. The trick is to loosen (NO need to remove) the 7-mm bolt,
slide the metal retaining plate out. Then slide the PEM out.
4. Now you can squeeze the tab with fingers (usually this is NOT enough to lift the
inner tab enough), so use a small screwdriver GENTLY to lift it up as shown.
Then it will be easy to disconnect.
Hope this helps...

Add another one to the mix:
* 8629614 = Bosch 580 001 002
* 30742823 = Bosch 580 001 002
So basically 8629614 is the same as 30742823.
In other words, to me, all these PEMs are interchangeable, functionally speaking...
