Are we talking about (what I am calling the button up top or) the knob at top of shifter that you depress? Even though I have a brand new one in there it feel a little sticky when trying to depress it. Which makes me wonder if the actually metal shaft underneath need to be lubricated or something?
I'm talking about pushing the whole knob straight downward. Like give it a few sharp pops with your open palm/heel of your hand, make sure it is fully seated on the shaft. The knob should be hard to remove if it is properly installed, you have to really pull hard to break it loose usually.

If the button feels sticky, I'd pull the knob off and check the button like that, too. If the button is not sticky with the knob removed, you may be right about lubrication further down. But if the button is sticky even with the knob removed, I'd spray something in there to clean it up, it may be gummy around the button. Maybe for ease of knob removal check this before you fully seat the knob downward.

Actually with the shifter completely off the button doesn't really depress at all?
When I got it on there it could move but felt sticky kind of like it wasn't moving the bar very well.
Thanks for clarifying... I will pull off the knob shifter and start over today...

Not sure if the button should move when the shifter is off but sounds like you are saying it should...

Would you spray grease or wd etc...

Once again if the shift lock button doesn't work, then I assume that is not related to the shifter.

And the cable that I need to reveal at the console needs to be checked...

Wait someone said the button still needs to be depressed when using the shift lock button!

Sorry I am all over the place need coffee..

I just read that Lithium Grese can dry out and wd-40 can evaporate maybe silicone is the best choice?

I sprayed the key hole of my hatch in the rear with Lithium Grease to get the key in maybe a bad idea?

Got the new shifter off -- was a little harder.

The shaft that the button engages won't move period.

The button on the new shifter works great I tested it after watch Robert actuate his with a small screw driver.

But that shaft the shifter is supposed to depress will not move at all!

And of course even when I press the shiftlock button still will not budge.

Should I spray something down in there or should I just take the console up and look in there?
