1998 alternator plates ps pump diagram requested

I’m puttingGrunhilde back together and am assembling the alternator , tensioner, ps pump and the attendant plates and hardware

This is a pretty complicated setup and the Volvo web store diagram doesn’t even show all the parts.

I found Robert’s video and I think I know how it all fits, but a better diagram would be useful

Does anyone have one?

Three bolts holding in the alternator.

Longer one goes into a threaded captive nut in passenger side of the tensioner mount

Two shorter ones have separate nuts and go through both alternator and plates on the driver side

It’s really clear from this diagram, MVSarcasm (tm) intentional

I did this job on my 850 a couple of weeks ago. I may have suffered minor brain damage in the process, but that diagram makes sense to me. Does the 98 version have that big metal plate bracket in front of the PS pump?

It does, and that 2as messing me up.

I managed to work out the work order procedure which is pretty important for this task

Of course, I will get to test it as replacing the voltage regulator on the car didn’t solve the battery light problem

I now recall this from an 850 we had. Owned it for 6 years and there was always a strange noise on start up and a lot of serp belt movement. Eventually had enough not long before selling it and dis-assembled the whole assembly to discover bolt #10 was missing completely!! Fitting a new one made a huge difference and no chirp on start up!!

Didn’t have the right tool to tension the spool on the serp belt, so we just pulled the two M8 bolts, loaded the tensioner into a vice, tensioner it and inserted the 3.5mm hex key, then reinstalled the tensioner and the serp belt.

So you win the cheapest sepentine tool award, I'd say. Or did we have a cheaper one in the meantime?

It cost me $50 for two hours of struggling with it before I thought to bench it.

With a 12 mm socket and a nail , though, one could easily replace the serp belt by bolting it to an M8 on the car somewhere and then setting the pin, reinstalling, and then threading the belt

Here’s the build up procedure I went with

Start with bolt #10 down low. This comes left to right ( car orientation) through the boss on the alternator as shown. It threads into a captive nut on the plate 13

Bolt 15 goes through the mount but not the alternator , and then into a captive nut into the left plate

I found these to be 12 mm hex heads, the nuts 13 mm hex heads on M8 shanks

Keep everything loose until you get the power steering bolts started through the upper plates, two on left , three through pulley in right.

The very front plate isn’t shown in the diagram , I think it’s a 1998 only item. I’ll document it separately
