1. I obtained a "folding drink holder". These can be found online and in many car parts stores. The tan I got closely, but not perfectly, matches the tan plastic in my 96 850.

4. Drilled console, attached cupholder with mending plates for rear support. I used 1/2" or 5/8" 10-24 stainless screws with nylon locknuts.

I wish the cupholder arms were a little tighter or adjustable with screws. Maybe there are higher quality versions of these out there.
The console plastic tends to be brittle, so I limited the amount of torque I put on the locknuts AND the size of the drink I put in the holder. So far, for medium-sized fast food drink cups and plastic bottles of fruit punch or tea, it works fine.
I typically would not drill into interior plastic like this. But I needed a different cupholder. If this breaks off down the line, I feel there are probably enough tan 850 consoles out there. I know there are replacement cupholders, they have been making this folding style unit for years. I had one in my Jeep 10+ years ago.
