My 1959 544 is generally free of rust, but has some dents and scratches. I believe it was always an Oklahoma car. I have never had it running. The engine seems to have reasonable compression. It is mostly complete inside and out. Seats and interior are bad. My first step is to get the carbs rebuilt and see if it will run. I have stalled at this step for several years.

That car, and Oklahoma, are both OK!

That looks like a do-able project. How are the floors?

The answer is maybe. All our old photos are in storage for another month or 2. I'll take a look then. I'm not sure I have many as at that age they were just cars. I was proud of them but possibly not enough to take pictures.

I often wonder about the idea of a "rolling restoration" of a running car, versus the whole rotisserie full restoration bit - disassembly, labeling, boxing, stripping. rebuilding, body work and painting, reassembly. Without a lot of money, those big restorations can sometimes stall. Then you forget where things are and how it goes back together.

If the chassis and floors are good, you could pull the drivetrain and suspension, clean up the bottom and coat it in POR, paint and rebuild the suspension, rebuild engine if necessary, new clutch, refurbished hardware.. Then it's a protected, updated, rolling car. Then you can attack interior and seats. Maybe glass out and repairs and paint first, then interior.

I was thinking to get the 544 running and driveable and go. I do not expect to do a full restoration. It would have faded paint and ratty seats. I have driven worse. It would still be fun to drive round town and get thumbs up.

Yeah, that would be fun. A running functional car has a whole different value to me than a perfect, gleaming shell in a shop that will never be reassembled, or has no engine. I'm not too excited about museum pieces that don't run.
