Re: Cams Identification
Sadly many questions go unanswered, and since this is an old thread with no answer, I hope you figured it out. But for those who have not, once you lock cams in, the VVT gears are aligned to the insanely small notches on sprockets which are near invisible, so when you locate them, mark them with white paint. Only then should you torque down the VVT;s to 88 foot lbs. Technically, as long as cams are locked, you could make new marks as VVT can be locked down in any position, it all depends on cams being locked with tool to set the VVT's and timing. My cam ID's are barely visible on back of heads, but there is a reference of I for intake and E for exhaust. So get out your magnifying glass. lol

Since there is no answer, perhaps you can tell up how you resolved your issue. I know about the ever so slight serial numbers and the I for intake and E for exhaust, but if the VVT sprocket is removed, and you set crank alignment, can you rotate cams safely 360 degrees? Of course, rotating in same direction as would be normal as in clockwise. Just curious, as I recall, no damage of valves once crank timing is set. Of course, this is while timing belt is off. My question is this, are the marks on VVT sprockets important since mine were not visible, and another person had it out of whack and painted new marks on sprocket? Technically, if locking tool is in place, shouldn't locking the VVT sprocket make no difference as long as marks are made for timing reference points later?
Thanks,
Thanks,

Marks are not important if you align the timing by locking up everything. After the belt is on, tensioner is loaded, sprocket bolts are fully tightened, you can paint your own marks.
