1999 S80 T6 - Parked overnight, now engine making noise?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Still hope to get over by the weekend. Quick question. Is there any warning lights on? I will bring my laptop and we can check for codes is you have power nearby.

I think you may be onto something with that suggestion. Went to Brynmor's house today to have a look at the car to see if I could help identify if it is a lost cause or possible repair.

Checked the obvious stuff like no oil in water, coolant not contaminated, oil level and condition, looked for leaks but nothing seemed out of order.

Is coolant type critical in these engines? He had put in the same stuff the PO had used. It is a pale yellow/green color. Having never used anything other than Volvo coolant I am not sure what is ok to use aftermarket.

Anyway, got Brynmor to start the car up with my stethoscope in my ears to try to do limited engine running and try to ID possible area or areas of noise.

Most noise was from valve cover area closest to the timing belt. Nearly blew the wax out of my ears it was so loud!!

Brynmor had seen the reply above on the VVT valve. I think this may well be the issue. It may have failed or seized (I guess those are the same).

Suggested he and his dad pull the valve plastic cover and remove the valve, clean and retry without refitting the cover to see if it gets rid of the noise.

I am not familiar with working on the VVT system. If this is seized or failed, will it do damage to the engine? It has only been run for very short bursts 3 or 4 times?

If the VVT valve needs replaced, is the part the same as a 5 cylinder motor? Hoping it is not unique to the T6 i-6 motor as it would be expensive for this young student to replace. There are several P80 and P2's in PnP if they are the same part where he could pull a used spare to try. Eventually he may have to replace the valve with new but don't want to spend that kind of money until we know it is the issue.

sounds like a job for the VOLVO task force! Alberta division .

Can you try running it without the valve cover on? Messy I know but even just for a few seconds maybe ?

Fix your eyes on the alternator pulley and see if it is doing a dance.

A bad VVT won’t hurt the engine. It only advances 2-3 teeth of timing

I would track that with a hose pipe stuck in my ear with timing [cover off.

For 2.9 engine - valve cover cannot be removed as it part of the head assembly and holds the cams in place. Plastic timing cover can be removed for listening.

Sound to me is exhaust in nature - have you checked the intake and exhaust bolts and exhaust piping? At this time of year critters take refuge.

In line with RickHaleparker - Have you removed the serp belt and manually spun each rotating component?

Agree with this! I just did the same for a what I thought was a noisy power steering pump. Pulled the belt off , started it and no noise. I hand spun the tensioner pulley and it was that , or its bearing at least that was making the noise
