2008 XC90 axle reluctor tone ring

2008 XC90 axle reluctor tone ring

I am changing the CV axles on a 2008 XC90 V8... When I removed the old axles I noticed one of the axles has a plastic ring on the reluctor tone ring. The plastic ring has 48 slits to allow the tone ring teeth to be exposed. The other axle does not have the plastic ring on the reluctor tone ring. Is this plastic ring required or is it a shipping protector that was not removed by the previous mechanic?

Its not a dust shield for the wheel bearing is it? You'd think they would be on both sides. Dont know.
