Hey ladies and gents,
Just got an 88 760GLE last thursday. 111K miles on it. Here's the problem:
Last night I was just driving through the city and it was a little chilly, so my buddy turned on his heated seat. (Just a note on the heated seats: I noticed that the passenger side switch lit up when it was switched, the drivers side didn't, perhaps there's a ground fault on the driver switch) Well, about 2 minutes later, the orange arrow came up on the dash indicating that overdrive had kicked out. Also, his heated seat had shut off, the power seats wouldn't move, and the windows and sunroof were disabled. I figured it was just the #14 fuse, so I threw a new 10Amp fuse in the fusebox today, and it blew it the second I turned on the car. Just for giggles, I tried another new one, same thing. Since the car is only a few days old to me, I called the seller, who is a mechanic, and he said he will take a look at it. Is there anything that I can give him a heads up on when I bring him the car to look at, or anything I can try in the meantime?

1988 760GLE OD Fuse
The wiring under the car and near the transmission tends to disintegrate and shorts out easily. You need to get the car up and check the wiring to the OD solonoid first. You can replace it or tape it if it is grounding out.

I took a look at the wiring under the car and the stuff around the solenoid still looked insulated pretty well. There were one or two bare spots in the cable around the shifter end. I patched those up but the darn fuse is still blowing. I looked at my fuse diagram again and found that the heated seats appear to be on fuse 35, but there's no fuse 35 in my fusebox so I thought that maybe it was behind the ashtray with the OD relay but I could not get the center console to slide out, it was being restricted by the plastic running around the shifter. More importantly though, I'm wondering how heated seats, on a different line than overdrive could have taken it out, unless the short is where the OD relay is sitting?

By this I assume your fusebox is on the left side of the instrument panel. There should be 35 fuses - 2 outer rows of 10; a centre row of 13 and #34 & #35 mounted at the top of the plate, both rated at 30 amps.I thought that maybe it was behind the ashtray
This is from the owner's manual:
Bill.Note: Fuses No. 34 and 35 are circuit breakers which activate when overloaded. After 20 seconds, the circuits should have cooled down and function normally.

I did notice something that I did not before, however. When I turn the key to position two, I hear a *click* *click* coming from what sounded like the same general place as the solenoid. Is that normal for it to do that, or could the solenoid be toast?
Also, there is a relay tray behind the passenger kick panel. Does this house the OD relay in the 760's? I've read that the 740 relays are behind the ashtray but is it different on the 760's?

Your relay panel is behind the kick panel. 740 fuse/relay panel is behind the ash tray and much easier to access.

It sounded as though it was coming from the solenoid on the gearbox. I had the relay uncovered and it didn't seem to click at all.
On a side note: to diagnose if it is the relay, could I just pull the relay and drop a fuse in or would having no relay in the tray stop the flow of electricity to the other accessories on the line?
