I struggled for about 45 minutes trying to get the head to release, rechecked my procedure and nut count three times

I found my docs did not have reference to theRN MANIFOLD TO block stud mount, shown in the picture, parts (7-13)

You get head separation of about 5 mm if you forget to remove this then it sticks

On edit,,,my car had a stud and a nut, not a long bolt like part (7) shown here, clear in my picture

Racks are stressful. I had a heck of a time getting the spline to release from the steering coupler. Then getting the new spline back in. And its soo easy to cross thread the hydraulic fittings. But you seem very methodical and patient so I'm sure you'll be good.

Steve, once you expose its innards, if it looks like you'll need stuff, I'm getting ready to harvest bits from my '98 XC before I scrap the carcass. It suffered catastrophic failure of the timing belt tensioner, but was doing well right up until then. Let me know.

Wrapped into a NE cruise, not too bad about 5 hours, so an overnight.

Luckily I have a T4 camper that I tow , so I can self -isolate

Need a bit warmer weather , though. Anything above 35 is tolerable

Are you committed to parting it or could we make a good runner by fixing it? I have A spare engine up here in ny and can donate time

What about Victor Reinz valve stem seals?
I always thought that they are oem.

I'm preparing for head rebuilt because of bad valve stem seals,but i'll take the car to my mechanic to do the job because i don't have that kind of knowledge or tools to do the job myself.

Same, I leave replacing the valve stem seals to the machine shop.

I have paid close attention to the posts about who makes the valve stem seals. Admittedly I haven't read them all but it is still unclear who makes them from what I've read, and I would never take the chance on this item. Do you know about Volvo part number 272424? viewtopic.php?t=71962

There is enough data for Volvo only on the stem seals

I’m wrestling a bit with Corteco , Elwis, or Volvo for the head gasket itself.

Nice in the sun but hard on the hands

Pulled the turbo and can see the power steering rack is going to be easy.

Head is in machine shop for cleaning and evaluation, ordered first wave of parts

I would use Victor Reinz or Volvo headgasket.
In fact....i'm considering to use full set of gaskets and seals from Victor Reinz(headgasket,anaerobic sealant,intake and exhaust manifold.

Victor Reinz is probably the best aftermarket brand for gaskets and seals which is used in many car makes as oem.
Corteco is also used by Volvo for some applications.

Something makes me think that Volvo also use Victor Reinz and Corteco gaskets and seals in the production line.
