I spent a long time making sure the fluid was fully flushed and at exactly the correct level while the fluid was at 40 degrees C. Though I didn't take the plunge and remove the bellhousing side case, I'm confident everything is working right now. The second time went much faster than the first, for what it's worth...
Thanks for the update, always appreciate finding out about what happened, especially a big project like this. That's a lot of work of you've done and it's good to hear the second transmission in working well.

Like SuperHerman asked, I'd be interested in knowing the year and type/model number of transmission you used successfully the second time.

I finally figured out how to calculate the internal gear ratio differences between the 50sn and 51sn transmission types and the ratios differences are very minor so, in my case, where I bought a 51sn (2001-2004) to replace the 50sn the only real difference that I could find was the final drive ratio as a possible incompatibility and those gears can be swapped if needed. Newer model years (2005 on) changed the connectors types for the wiring harness so this is a known difference in later years.

I wish I knew what didn't work the first time! My theory is that it was either a gummed up internal filter on the first one or else I did something incorrect when filling it and checking levels. It was certainly not the wrong part. Both were from S60s from the same era, though the place didn't actually tell me exactly which year and model. For $175, you get (some) of what you pay for, I guess.

I just made sure it was an AW50-51SN. Everything moved over fine. They snipped the wires rather than disconnect them, so I had to transfer my harness over and take off the valve body cover. A bit of a pain, but not too terrible.

Also to note--it's still working perfectly a couple months on. We're driving it daily. No shifting issues whatsoever. It's at 278k miles now...hoping for at least another 50k!

I can understand the time savings in a salvage yard of just cutting the wires in a harness but they could just as easily cut the wires upstream and after the connectors to save the buyer of the transmission from having to remove the side cover and swapping out the wiring harness or splicing all the wires together. With the transmission I purchased they even cut the wires on the input and output shaft speed sensors so close to the sensors you couldn't even salvage the use of the sensors with wire splicing.

Good to hear the transmission is working well for you.

I just recently did the trans on my 2001. Was pretty straight forward. Only thing that was different was a few plug ins. Took them off my old trans and swapped them over. Put 200 miles on it so far so good!
