Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?
The story behind this car one of obsession on my brother's part. The car belonged to a family friend who brought it new in 86, It went off the road in 99 and when the owner lost his house it ended up in the body shop where we got it from and my brother kept tabs on it. Well now the owner of the body shop is winding down his business and cleaning out his shop so the car had to go. Luckily everyone involved are good friends so they had to figure a price for storage of the vehicle and I was more than happy to go half with my brother to get it. We paid him $300 for the storage fee and $100 to get it home. I almost broke my neck rushing to the ATM for some cash.

I am an idiot. I found this oil change sticker in the usual spot where they always go. Lol. Accounting for 13K+ average per year...that makes my mileage around 195K. The odo that came with the car was not original. I think PO figured the issue was the odo, replaced it, was hardly car literate, and did not realize there was a whole Volvo family here to help. After I replaced ABS, odo worked fine. Wow the realization of mileage is bonkers
My Impala trans started slipping at 196k. But the audible wear on my manual trans makes more sense with 195K on the clock.
In about one week, I will probably have some unfortunate news about this car... Until then, salivate from the suspense. Cheers!

Not today but last week: traded in the '99 V70XC for a P2!
I will definately miss the XC, but it was starting to give me too many problems at 250k miles. I had deleted the angle gear long ago, but kept being chased by vibrations and broken right front driveshafts. Suspension and driveline parts for a P80 XC/AWD are harder and harder to find over here, and often enough I had to use used parts that seemed to be not much better than the parts that had broken. That, and a coolant leak, exhaust leak (exhaust... or what was left of it) and a power steering leak made me decide to let it go.
Now for the new ride: What an upgrade from the p80! It's a 6-speed manual P2 2.4D and... it's fast! Supposedly the PO had had it chiptuned. It's now at 190k miles. Was fully serviced untill 177k miles. Also, it's a lot quieter and more economical than the P80, i've now driven about 500 miles and not even used two thirds of a tank. In the P80, I barely got farther than 400 miles on one tank.
First thing I had to do was get an APK (Dutch for MOT). My car was sample-selected for a second MOT check by a government official, they do this to occassionaly to check whether a mechanic knows how to do their job. The official too, made no complaints about this 15 year old car. Seems to be a lucky find!
I have already installed a bluetooth module and phone charger, and installed the subwoofer I had in my P80.
Next up are:
- installing new rear side marker LED's (current ones are both broken, only advice at the MOT).
- oil change and cleaning out the EGR valve (curious to find how dramatic that looks after 190k miles)
- contemplating whether i'm going to fit my old amber flashy lights in the new car, or leave it stock.
