Thermostat or water pump bad?

I'm thinking it might be the wiring since I was messing around in the area where the wires run under the intake manifold. I'm going to unhook the sensor and see it it changes. If not I'll move the harness around and recheck. Hopefully it'll be an easy fix without having to remove the intake manifold.

The only wire that should be involved with the coolant system is the temprature sensor and resvoir level sensor. the temp sonsor should be next to the thermostat. Maybe it's not seated right; maybe it decided to die once it was finally disturbed, so check that out first; you can probably reach for it or at least eyeballl it.

I unplugged the sensor and the guage was still pegged. My fan came on and ran, even though everything is cold, so I know the fan and relay work fine.

I think that rules out the water pump, and thermostat. Possibly the coolant temperature sensor as well. Now it's down to a wiring issue, I'm assuming. Can someone do a quick check on their car for me, that's cold now or can be tested cold later? Could you unplug your temp sensor and see if the gauge pegs to the hot mark? That'll give me a better idea of what all to look at.

I can try it in my 2005 but that’s a different model. I’ll check and see if the sensor is the same at least.

If the ECU check finds failed wire or missing connector (an electrical issue), the (DIM) displays an engine related stop warning immediately upon engine start. LIMP HOME is activated for safety.

It's not raining so once I'm fully awake I'll throw my dice on it and see what codes it shows. I'm sure it threw one when I unplugged the sensor, but I didn't start the car with it unplugged so I don't know yet.

I reset the codes, and the gauge went back to normal. I have the heat on and it's definitely hot. It's almost up to operating temp, and then I'll take it for a short drive to see if anything changes.

It seems to be fine now, so I'm not sure what's going on with it. Both upper and lower hoses are hot, the heat is hot blowing out of the vents, and the fan is kicking on and off like it's supposed to. I don't have any messages in the text window telling me to shut it off like I did before, and the check engine light never came on at all before or now.

It's 90F outside, and with the heat turned on all the way it was way too hot for me. I have the AC on now and all seems to still be working ok.

Any thoughts as to what could've happened to peg the gauge? What are the chances of it coming back? Is the car still safe to drive if the guage does peg itself on initial startup?

Any more updates and I'll post back. Right now I'm just sitting with the car idling and the AC on all the way and the temp guage is in the center where it's normally at.

I would get an IR temp reader and document some temperatures around the engine compartment when warmed up.

Put sharpie marks where you reference.
