I really want to try Ospho, I've heard it's great stuff. I'm going to order some to fix some surface rust in my E30 where the floor isn't too far gone.

Yeah, it's a trial and error process. No need to worry about valve damage unless the engine is run with it out of alignment.

Tackled the tank vent issue in the wife's GLT today.

Trans jack came in handy, mainly for stability, as I asked my wife to not fill up her car this week until after I took care of this. There was maybe 3-4 gallons in there.

Once the tank was dropped, I was able to get my eyes on the issue. It wasn't the big "s" hose (but I knew that already), but instead rodents had chewed a good 3/4" of vent hose apart at some point in the past.

Got that tended to and replaced the "s" hose, since I was in there and I had one. Was a mild hassle, as the hose clamp on the smaller end was oriented so the screw head was on the bottom of the hose and pointed at the fuel line fittings on top of the tank. Took a little finagling to get that loose, but easy enough outside of that.

All together (I vacuumed out the rodent debris after I took the pic)

That's out of the way now (after a good 4-5 years of ownership)

Thanks Foggydogg. Funny how some things don't really change. We used to use phosphoric acid to clean rust on our cars 45+ years ago. Worked pretty well as it turned the remaining rust black and neutralised it.

Take the pulley off and back out the broken bolt with Liquid Wrench and Left hand drill bits.

The idea is to get the Left hand drill bit to bite and turn the bolt not cut it. A Left hand drill bit turns and cuts counterclockwise. You turn a bolt counterclockwise to remove it. Once the bit has enough bite in the bolt it should turn the bolt rather then cut it.

The Liquid Wrench is to lubricate the threads, reduce the friction and keep from burning the drill tip. Go slow on the drill.

Phosphoric Acid a ingredient in some Rust converters. Phosphoric acid converts some iron oxides into an inert layer of ferric phosphate.

The main ingredient in rust converters is Tannic Acid which converts iron oxides into Ferric Tannate which is stable and acts as a protective.

One of my dads favorite chemicals was Water Glass ( Sodium Silicate ). He had all kinds of uses for that. Including emergency Head Gasket repair.

Are you sure it's actually even seized in there? What were you doing when it snapped?
