Rod knock? Is this bad even possible?

Post by Hakunamatata56 »

Hi all, new here. I have a 2012 S60 T5. For the past couple months or so I had a light tick for a minute or so after start up. Figured no big deal, light piston slap from the cold start or possibly a lifter starting to go.

Well, the light tick turned into a louder tick even when warm out and quickly turned into a loud knock like a rod knock.

Ive had many issues with oil consumption and have always had to add a quart or two between oil changes. Even have had the no oil pressure light come on in turns before signaling I was low on oil again.

Long story short, yesterday the knock out of nowhere became very loud, no oil pressure light came on so I put it in neutral, shut off the engine and coasted to a place to stop.

Towed the car to the dealer they said rod knock, needs a motor for $14K. Had the car towed home. Pulled the plugs in all of the cylinders, brought #1 cylinder to TDC and checked for play in the rod/crank journals.

This is what I found on the #1 cylinder. (Video link below) Is this much play even possible? It’s like the bearings completely fell out and it’s rod to journal contact.

Could it be anything else?

Not sure how far or what's necessary to figure out if it's a rod knock? A mechanic I knew back in the mid 90's didn't want to spend time on it so used 50W motor oil to test it and the knock was greatly reduced. He then decided to removed the pan and found the bearing. Put in the largest bearing and shimmed it with foil . The car was a an old Hyundai Excel with the 1.5 Mitsubishi motor.

My car started making this knocking noise. I checked the oil and it was completely gone. The oil light never came on. Now I'm told the engine is gone. When I looked up my model and year in complaints it was reported this was a problem but a recall has not been issued.

We believed the 2013 Volvo S60 was leaking oil but the mechanic from local service station did not find a leak. The local mechanic called boston Volvo service and was informed that the Volvo S60's has piston ring problems and to bring the vehicle to boston Volvo for confirmation. Boston Volvo confirmed vehicle has the oil consumption problem.

All that’s left of the bearing. Think I could sand the journal, throw some new bearings in with some heavy weight oil and get a few more thousand out of it?

Nice work and fast! Use the 306 20W-50 and that engine will last awhile. Have use it on and off for over 25 years I think. Friend's Ferrari clubbers used it. This will make that engine purr and last for sometime. Call the company for a local Rep where you can pick up a case.

On a side note use the highest grade of gas and you have a better chance of having no CAT issues and if you do. A few MVS have tried this and worked.

With the amount of oil going through the rings I'm surprised your CATS are still good? The Swepco will also reduce oil consumption. You may want to adopt a smoother driving style if you are use to driving the Volvo to it's capability. That too will help reduce the oil consumption also.

Have you decided whether to replace the rod bearing (bottom only or complete)? If so, what about the others?
