What I remember I wasn't happy with it (lifter noises, oil was looking a bit strange when draining, probably not really what people call sludge). But don't read too much into it. Not saying mobil1 is bad, but for me its definitely not what I will be using
I've actually head a lot of people complain about excessive lifter noise with 0w40. I've never dealt with it on my several 5 cylinders I've run on 0w40. Believe it or not, I've found that 10w30 causes the most lifter noise on these engines.
My former 98 S70 T5 with 230K mile, when purchased, ran the best on 15W-40 unless the winters are cold as in below 40 degrees F. The P80's clacked more than the new ones comparing to the P1 or T6. Perhaps it's just the 2.3?

The Castrol OW-40 is okay so far but the Rotella T6 5W-40 is a bit more robust and bit quieter when pushed. Getting too old to do that so it doesn't really matter.

Huh, that is really interesting. I've been using M1 and Castrol Edge 0w40 for years in all of my Volvos and most BMWs with no issues at all. They seem to love it, running smooth as silk with minimal consumption. I've also had good luck with 5w40, I have M1 5w40 European formula in my S70 and it seems to be great. Previously I had Amazon Basics 0w40 Euro.
I'm actually currently running Pro Line 5w40 European blend in my R. I got it at Pep Boys during their closing sale (70% off everything) for about $2/quart. It's made by Warren, so it's decent stuff. BMW LL-01 certification too, so I trust it! So far so good!
