Oil pump repair questions

Post by FireFox31 »

Hello, my 2000 V70 NA with 200k mi has a leak around my crankshaft, so I'm planning to replace the oil pump seals during a timing belt change. I still have some questions after reading this great 1993 850 oil pump thread and this oil pump teardown post.

Must I drain the engine oil before removing the oil pump?

Is it critical that I replace the pressure relief spring inside the pump?

Though not strictly necessary, is there an inexpensive aftermarket version of the crankshaft seal install tool 9995455? I saw a "laser blue" one on eBay, but no indication of who made it. I guess I can measure the seal to know the tool's diameter, but still I have to find it based on that measurement.

No draining need.
Check relief spring and plunger for being worn out. If there's no wear, put it back.
No special tool needed, just a hint:

Thanks. I'll try that clever solution for the seal. I misread the Haynes book, thinking they wanted me to install the pump with the seal in place. Now I clearly see that the pump goes on first and the seal goes on second.

The spring is part 9146132. My local dealership said it's "backordered with no availability date." Volvocars.us says the same thing. Skandix.de has 12 in stock. I need it to do the job tomorrow, so I have to hope the spring is ok.
