Turbo upgrade ?

Turbo upgrade ?

I'm planning to upgrade Sveedy's turbo when I get her engine back from the machine shop, and I was going to go with a 16T.
But if I'm spending the $$, then would I be better off with a 18T ? I think a 19 might be too much - I don't want to damage anything internal to the engine. So opinions on this ?

While I am no expert on turbos, the only advice I can give is it depends what you want from your car and how you plan to drive it.

A 19T is not a great turbo as it has a bit of a lag and is lousy at lower rpm's. It is not great for driveabilty.

18T is again fairly higher rpm turbo for the harder driver.

16T is a good compromise for low end torque and quicker response.

If you want quicker response and low end grunt a 13G is a good option. I liked the 13G in the V70 XC we had. Downside was it ran out of puff at higher speeds or acceleration.

The next consideration is what you are going to do with the engine. More air may require larger injectors to make any benefits from a larger capacity turbo.

Then you may want to add a 'tune'. Again that will need to be considered in the equation.

Of course you can then go the hybrid turbo internals that can be purchased from companies live Vivaperformance.

Good luck whatever way you go, but let us know how it turns out!

Hi Neil,
I've already done injectors, pump, N/A throttle body etc, exhaust mani, and a tune from Vast. While the engine is being rebuilt, I'm taking the opportunity to drop in N/A camshafts. So it sounds like a 16 is a good compromise.
I don't want to screw anything up, that's for sure. :)

Sveedy, it's a little apples/oranges, but have you seen bmdubya's V70 build? https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/how-t ... -v70-fast/ Many similarities with with what you're doing. He chose a 19T.
