760 Power Brake Booster

Post by DeRail »

Hey guys,

got a call from the mechanic today saying that my 88 760GLE's brake booster wont hold the vacuum overnight. He called over to the Volvo dealership next door, they wanted ~750$ for a new one. So, I quickly checked FCP Groton and they have one for about half the price. IPD had one, but it was for vehicles without ABS.

Is this the best way to go, without going for a rebuilt booster from somewhere like here: http://www.racepages.com/products/?Ntt= ... er&N=11867 or would a rebuilt one not cause too many problems.

Used ones work for me. Failure rate is low so used ones are generally a good bet.

I go along with sseir39 on the used item.

Did the mechanic tell you what the problem was? The only time I saw a problem with one of these it was the seal behind the valve. We replaced that and it held vacuum.

Cheers Bill,

have given the mechanic a heads up on that seal. If it turns out that I need to get another one, I'll probably pick up one of the rebuilt ones I posted.

I'll keep you updated :)
Thanks!

Probably you have the same brake booster as the 740 series. It is a common problem that you have a leak where the vacuum hose is attached to the brake booster. That is just some sort of conical rubber cone pressed into the booster canister, supposed to be air tight. Very often, this simple connection is leaking.

Cheers for the help all...

I picked up the car yesterday. Because it was a very slow leak, my mechanic was able to re route the vacuum line so that the booster had sole access to it, thus avoiding having to replace the unit.

Thanks for the advice again, everyone
Darrell
