322 Incorrect Gear Ratio

I don't have any other info.

I would try a trans flush and reset the code to see if it came back.

Thanks for the reply...here's more info. I reset the code and for a couple miles the tranny shifed smooth and flawlessly but then when shifting from a low gear (I think 1st to 2nd) to the next gear it was rough, the arrow light starts flashing and after that the car doesn't want to downshift into 1st even after a full stop. It will go down if I manually shift the lever to "low". I did this twice and the results were the same .Also I checked the fluid and it appears to me to be slightly overfilled and a little on the brownish side. So, I'm wondering if this might be some sort of minor type of problem or something much more serious and costly such as a full tranny replacement? I'm not a mechanic so please treat me like I the novice that I am.

Your tranny might be at the end of its life -- or -- your trans fluid might be well past its useful life.

I'd change the fluid and see what happens. How many miles ya got?

Mileage is 135,000. I just bought this car at a very good price (private deal, and maybe this is why). Overall it's in excellent shape and has all the service records and a clean carfax report. We really like it but of course, hope this isn't going to be a costly repair. I made an appointment for a transmission specialist shop to look at it on Monday, but I'd like to try and do the trans flush over the weekend. I've never done it before and would need a tutorial...can you point me in the right direction?

After some more searching I've found the necessary info...looks easy enough...I'll report back after I do the change

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/tips_content.php

has a bunch of tips and semi-how-to's on changing the atf. Go to that page and search with a CTRL-F (Windows PC) for "atf" and "trans" to get to the right atricles.

I have a high mileage 850 GLT myself and the first thing I did after the "hard" initial test drive after the purchase was to flush the tranny and get the oil changed. Luckily all the belts were changed and documented.

One thing I have found, from this and various other sites, is that when you are sitting at a long light put the trans in neutral... it saves the fluid by not keeping it in a high temperature state and under undue pressure especially in city traffic situations.

Heck I do it for my manual vehicles so why not for my automatic.. <shrug>

Cheers
