Brake front hoses?

Brake front hoses?

So, while on the lift, I noticed that my inner front brakes are not completely contacting the rotor. Mechanic said that it may be due to old rotors. Easy enough to change rotors and pads...BUT...should I change the brake hoses? It's messy and I am doing it solo (without a bleeder system...just a wife to assist in pedal pushing). Help me get off the fence on whether to change them or not... Couldn't hurt, right? Just messy. 100K on the car- 2006 xc70

If the outer casing of the hoses is not yet cracking, then I wouldn't change them. There is unlikely to be any benefit from changing them in that case. If you do see cracks however, then the inner hose may still be fine but it's time to change them.

Definitely pull and inspect the caliper slide pins. Sand them down with fine grit if there is any pitting or buildup. Re-grease the pins with a thin layer silicone brake grease when re-assembling. I use Sil-Glyde.

You may have a caliper travel problem because of internal corrosion. If the brake fluid has not been change as suggested (at least every few years) or the brake fluid is very dark, you need to do a brake flush until fluid comes out clear. I like to change brake hoses after about 20 years. It is not usually hard if you can get the hose ends to turn. Best done at the same time as a flush.

You're hoses are probably fine but definitely change the brake fluid if you haven't done it in the last 4 years. Brake fluid is hydroscopic so it draws water from the air over time. "wet" brake fluid has a lower boiling point which makes it dangerous and can lead to corrosion of your caliper Pistons.

If you're caliper itself is seizing and needs to be replaced then you might as well do the hose for that caliper at the same time.

In 2018, I bought my 2004 V70 2.5T with 100K "dealer-serviced" by the previous owners.
As soon as I brought it home, both FRONT brake hoses were cracked, a dangerous condition that dealer techs did not diagnose properly.

Needless to say, I replaced the hoses using ATE brand (FCPEuro has them)...$24/each...
